The FYIs and Need to knows
Birth Education & Beyond the Belly
What should I bring?
Plan to dress comfortably and bring water, snacks, lunch to full day sessions, and any writing materials you require.
What if I need to miss a session/leave early?
Of course this is your time and your sessions. We ask you respect the time and effort of other attendees, but if you needy understand to leave early we completely understand.
Can older siblings attend?
The education space is a safe space for all those attending. Due to those circumstances we ask you arrange care for other children. If that is a tough option for your family, please contact Asha directly and arrange the details.
Yoga
Should I plan to only do the one registered session, or can I keep coming?
We strongly encourage children and their families to grow with Asha Thomas Family Wellness. Begin during prenatal and never stop coming back!
Why are all of the classes Registered?
Classes go back to back as registered classes to ensure there are enough families registered to pay for the space and create a play group. Occasionally however, sessions will have a small break between classes. It also keeps the space safe knowing who is enrolled and what the families need. We run low enrollment classes to ensure the class isn't overwhelming. We can include drop ins but please email us to be sure there is a session running and it isn't full.
What do I do with with my baby during baby yoga?
Our space is safe and friendly for baby, unless it is indicated that the class is parent or adult only. You can bring a comfortable baby blanket to lay on, some toys and anything else which makes baby happy. They will lay there doing what they need to do. Once baby begins to move around they may start visiting other babies and their parents. Be aware they may swap toys and pacifiers. If there is something you do not want touched by another infant best is to just not bring it.
Once baby is mobile (moving vigorously) you may need to bring babe to the Mindful Movers class in which baby will enjoy toys around the class while the adults enjoy a balanced flow of strength and relaxation. If baby wants to join us on the mat they're welcome too.
What if baby cries?
Our priorities are babies needs, then movement. If baby cries and needs their adult then you are welcome to feed, sooth or change baby. You're also welcome to come and go if baby needs to leave the room. Asha is also willing to hold baby and do anything that baby needs to be happy. Asha will also offer to wear baby if it helps, but then will not participate in asanas.
What do I do with my toddlers during yoga?
In toddler yoga it is made to be fun for the adults and children, while staying age appropriate. It is not appropriate practice to assume toddlers will want to participate, and that is okay! The class starts with mindfulness activities such as literacy to let them know they are welcomed to join. They are also welcome to wander and play when they are ready too. Toys are offered for the children. If there are toys you or your child do not wish to share with others please leave them at home.
Children are welcome to snack as toddlers tend to love to snack during class. Toddlers tend to be really good at sharing so please keep allergies in mind. If you are not comfortable with your child sharing please be sure to support them with behaviours.
What is yoga like for older children?
Classes are made for adults to enjoy without their children participating, but are aimed to be safe and engaging for them to enjoy! If they do not wish to join we encourage parents to meet them where they are at, and set good examples. This includes but does not limit participating in poses, songs, activities and other programming. The class for children who potentially will engage often includes songs, games, and literacy all encouraging yoga poses, breathing activities and mindfulness. I like to refer to it as Yoga-Play.
What happens during family yoga?
Family yoga combines all the information above for all of the ages of children who join us. Asha observes the ages and needs of the children and families in the first welcome class, and then plans accordingly.
What do we wear?
Wear what makes you comfortable and happy, same for babies and beyond! $99 yoga pants are not required, just make sure you feel comfortable.
What do I bring?
For adults: water, a mat, any props you own that you enjoy to include.
For babies: their diaper bag is welcomed, as well as somewhere to lay and something to enjoy.
Toddlers + : water and a snack (as well as a diaper bag or backpack.
Older children: water, a yoga mat and any props they enjoy.
Will participating in yoga mean I am participating in a religion?
Yoga is a traditional practice of movement coming from India. Once practiced for movement before sitting in stillness, the act of engaging in yoga has both been adapted as well as colonialized. When I am teaching yoga to my students and clients, I do everything I can as a white teacher to honour the traditional lineage of yoga, as well as adapting it to ensure it is safe and does not cause trauma for my students. I do not use the Sacred Sankrit names in my classes as I do not speak the language fluently, but will honour the original names of each pose. In doing so I understand yoga is a practice and not a religion.
